Wall finished with structural plaster in a concrete texture
Project Name
Interior design for a rental apartment in Krakow
Standard rental properties often rely on flat drywall – an off-the-shelf solution that results in predictable spaces. Instead of defaulting to this conventional approach for this Krakow apartment, I specified a wall finished with structural plaster in a concrete texture behind the bed. This choice introduces a raw, tactile surface that standard paint cannot achieve. To soften the industrial edge, concealed LED lighting is integrated directly within the bed headboard. This hidden light grazes the irregular surface, highlighting its depth and establishing a cozy atmosphere without relying on bulky fixtures.
Designing for the rental market requires balancing broad appeal with distinct character. I applied Scandinavian design principles to maintain a clean layout while integrating classic decor elements to ground the space. The tension between the rough concrete finish and traditional furnishings creates a layered interior. Similar to how a concrete staircase design in a modern house acts as a focal point, this textured wall anchors the bedroom. By embedding modern technologies, the apartment meets contemporary expectations for convenience.
Structural plaster in a concrete texture is used for walls to provide durability and add acoustic mass to minimalist interiors. This practical benefit is valuable in a rental property, where minimizing noise transmission improves the living experience. Its resilience withstands frequent tenant changes better than standard wallpaper. This focus on robust surfaces mirrors strategies used in larger interventions, such as the reconstruction design of a cube house. Ultimately, pairing rugged finishes with thoughtful illumination delivers a highly competitive residential unit.
